Stephen Decatur High School students have been working on reducing solid waste in their building.  Partnering with Go Green OC, students in the SDHS Surfrider Club along with students from Shannon Bone's 5th period Biology class were able to divert over 300 pounds of solid food waste from the cafeteria!  This year the composting program is limited to collecting food scraps from the back of the house in the cafeteria, but hopes to move to the student side next school year. The program has been funded by two local non-profit organizations, Go Green OC and the Surfrider Foundation-Ocean City Chapter.  Without their support and guidance, this groundbreaking environmental stewardship could not have happened.  SDHS looks forward to continuing to grow this program for years to come.

You can read more on the composting effort at the Dispatch article, here.

Pocomoke Middle School Club

The Pocomoke Middle student club recently went to Virginia Beach on a field trip. They connected with the Virginia Surfrider Foundation chapter, learned about what an ocean friendly garden is and even helped pull some weeds in the garden. The afternoon was spent whale watching with Rudee Inlet Tours. They saw humpbacks and had an amazing day! Thank you to the VA chapter for their hospitality!
